A shooting at Utah Valley University on Wednesday left Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, hospitalized with what witnesses described as a neck wound. The incident occurred during a student Q&A session, prompting a shelter-in-place order across campus.
University officials confirmed, “A single shot was fired on campus toward a visiting speaker. Police are investigating now.” Turning Point USA spokesperson Aubrey Laitsch added, “We are confirming that he was shot and we are praying for Charlie.” No other injuries have been reported.
Videos verified by the Associated Press show Kirk clutching his neck as bystanders react in shock. Former Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz, present at the event, said on Fox News he heard one shot and observed Kirk fall back, describing the police presence as “light.”
Political leaders across the spectrum condemned the attack. Mike Lee (R-UT) urged prayers, while Gavin Newsom called the act “disgusting, vile, and reprehensible.” Vice President JD Vance described Kirk as “a genuinely good guy and a young father.” FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed agents were monitoring the case closely.
The shooting follows a string of politically motivated violence in the United States, including the assassination of a Minnesota lawmaker in June and last year’s shooting of President Trump at a campaign rally.
