The CDC plans to update its COVID-19 isolation guidance, shifting from a fixed five-day isolation to criteria based on symptoms, The Washington Post reports. Under the new guidelines, individuals can end isolation after being fever-free for 24 hours without medication, if other symptoms are mild and improving.
This change, expected in April, aligns with practices in California, Oregon, and internationally, acknowledging the immunity built up from previous infections and vaccinations. Despite the 2023–2024 vaccine’s 54% effectiveness, only 22% of adults have received it. The CDC’s mask-wearing advice, currently recommending 10 days post-positive test, may also be revisited.
