A California man, David Nicholas Dempsey, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for violently attacking police during the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Dempsey, described as one of the most violent participants, assaulted officers with flagpoles, a metal crutch, and pepper spray. He also stomped on officers’ heads and used other rioters as “human scaffolding” to reach officers defending a tunnel entrance.
Judge Royce Lamberth condemned Dempsey’s actions, noting, “You did not get carried away in the moment.” Dempsey apologized for his conduct, calling it “reprehensible.” This sentence is among the longest for those involved in the Capitol riot.
