BOSTON, Massachusetts — A Boston-based nonprofit has paused a wellness voucher program for LGBTQ+ immigrants after its founder reported receiving death threats and warnings of potential immigration enforcement actions.

According to MassLive, the volunteer-led group OUTnewcomers had promoted a program offering $250 to $500 vouchers for services such as yoga, meditation, and peer support. The initiative, called “Belonging Matters,” prioritized low-income and vulnerable LGBTQ+ migrants.

Founder Sal Khan said the organization suspended the program after backlash intensified online, including criticism amplified by tabloid outlets and social media posts that mischaracterized the funding. Some users directed threats at Khan personally, including calls for deportation and violence.

Khan stated the program’s details were “taken out of context” and circulated without verification, contributing to the escalation. The organization said it is reassessing safety measures before resuming operations.

City officials clarified that a $7,500 grant awarded to OUTnewcomers through Boston’s Mayor’s Office for Immigrant Advancement was intended for mental health programming and could not be used for direct cash assistance.

Launched in 2023, OUTnewcomers focuses on supporting LGBTQ+ migrants, including asylum seekers and refugees facing persecution. The organization emphasized that protecting staff and participants remains its immediate priority as it evaluates next steps.
