The Boston Globe’s editorial board has called on President Biden to suspend his re-election campaign following his poor debate performance and recent challenges facing the Democratic Party. The board wrote, “In the days since last week’s presidential debate, President Biden’s team has said little that adequately explains why his performance was historically bad, beyond that he had a cold.”

Acknowledging the complexity and risk involved in replacing Biden, the board emphasized the urgent need for a candidate who can rally supporters and defeat former President Trump. The Globe joins other major outlets, including The New York Times, The New Yorker, and The Economist, in urging Biden to step aside.

The editorial board suggested that Vice President Harris and various Democratic governors are potential successors, but emphasized that Biden must “graciously bow out of the race and free his delegates” for the party’s and country’s benefit. Despite growing calls, including from Reps. Lloyd Doggett (Texas) and Raúl Grijalva (Ariz.), the White House confirmed that Biden will not be dropping out.

The Globe argued that Democratic leaders must convince Biden to exit the race as a hero, stressing that internal party hesitation to challenge Biden publicly may ultimately strengthen Trump’s position.
