President Joe Biden affirmed on Sunday that the U.S. is doing “everything we can” to prevent a broader war in the Middle East amid escalating violence between Israel and Hezbollah. Biden’s comments follow a deadly airstrike by Israel on Hezbollah in Beirut, which killed 31 people, including women and children, according to Lebanese health officials.

The strike on Friday also resulted in the deaths of Hezbollah’s operations unit leader and key commanders from its elite Radwan Force. Israel’s response came after Hezbollah launched approximately 140 rockets toward Israel, most of which were intercepted by the Iron Dome defense system.

The region has experienced rising tensions, with earlier attacks in Lebanon this past week killing 37 people and injuring thousands. Biden emphasized U.S. efforts to prevent further escalation in the volatile region.
