In his first major interview since leaving office, former President Joe Biden said he takes responsibility for Donald Trump‘s 2024 victory, but also blamed sexism and racism for Kamala Harris’s electoral defeat. Appearing on ABC’s “The View” with former First Lady Jill Biden, the 82-year-old Democrat said he intentionally remained quiet during Trump’s first 100 days to allow for a transition without interference.
“I was in charge and he won, so I take responsibility,” Biden said, while noting that gender and race “surprised” him as major factors in the election. “They went the sexist route,” he said of attacks against Harris, describing criticism that “a woman couldn’t lead the country and a woman of mixed race.”
Biden also addressed concerns about his age and debate performance last June, saying he exited the race to prevent dividing the party, not due to health concerns. Jill Biden rejected claims she shielded him from scrutiny, calling the criticism “very hurtful.”
Biden ended the interview with a pointed critique of his successor: “He’s had the worst 100 days any president has ever had.”
