In a Washington Post opinion piece, President Biden emphasized the importance of remembering the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack as a reminder that democracy is never guaranteed. “We should commit to remembering Jan. 6 every year,” Biden wrote, urging Americans to safeguard democracy for future generations.
Four years after the attack, Biden noted the violent actions of insurrectionists, who threatened lawmakers and assaulted law enforcement. He expressed pride that democracy endured but warned against forgetting the event, invoking the adage that those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.
Meanwhile, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi reflected on the lasting impacts, stating, “The violence didn’t end that day,” citing her husband’s attack as part of continued threats inspired by the events of Jan. 6.
President-elect Trump has pledged clemency for rioters and hinted at issuing pardons early in his term.
