President Joe Biden criticized former President Donald Trump for his comments about NATO, describing them as “appalling and dangerous.” During a campaign rally, Trump admitted he once threatened NATO allies he would “encourage” Russian aggression towards countries failing to meet financial and military contributions to NATO. Biden warned that Trump’s potential re-election could harm American international relations and embolden adversaries. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg highlighted the risks of undermining mutual defense commitments.

Trump’s campaign responded by critiquing Biden’s defense policies in Europe, arguing Trump’s approach made allies increase their NATO spending.
