President Biden has publicly criticized the impending six-week abortion ban in Florida, attributing its existence to the actions of former President Donald Trump. In a campaign speech delivered in Tampa, Biden expressed his disapproval of the ban, which is set to take effect in just over a week.

Biden pointedly blamed Trump for the appointment of the justices who played a pivotal role in overturning Roe v. Wade, thereby ending the constitutional right to an abortion. He stated, “Next week, one of the nation’s most extreme anti-abortion laws takes effect here in Florida. It’s criminalizing reproductive health care for before women even know whether they’re pregnant. Let’s be real clear. There’s one person responsible for this nightmare. And he’s acknowledged and he brags about it. Donald Trump.”

The Biden campaign has made abortion rights a central issue in its platform. It is working to remind voters of Trump’s record on the issue nearly every day. The campaign is launching ads that feature the stories of women who have been impacted by state abortion bans. Vice President Harris and other top administration officials have been traveling across the country, criticizing Republicans and Trump for their stance on abortion restrictions.

Florida’s Supreme Court recently upheld a 15-week abortion ban. This decision automatically triggered a six-week ban to take effect 30 days later. The Biden campaign has highlighted a November ballot measure that would allow Floridians to vote on guaranteeing access to abortion up to the point of viability, which is about 24 weeks. If passed, this initiative would overturn the six-week ban.

Trump has voiced criticism of Florida’s six-week ban, as well as a near-total ban in Arizona. However, he also stated that decisions about the legality of abortion should be left up to individual states. In his remarks, Biden mocked Trump for selling $60 Bibles and called out his support among evangelical voters. Biden accused Trump of making a political deal with the evangelical base of the Republican Party to overlook his moral and character flaws in exchange for his commitment to appoint justices to the Supreme Court who would overturn Roe.

Biden warned that Trump cannot be trusted when he says he doesn’t support a federal abortion ban. He stated, “Don’t think he’s [not] making a deal right now with MAGA extremists to ban nationwide abortion in every single state, because he’s making it.” This statement underscores Biden’s commitment to preserving abortion rights and his determination to hold Trump accountable for his actions.
