Mike Donilon, former top aide to President Biden, told House investigators Thursday he received $4 million for his role in the president’s 2024 reelection campaign—and stood to earn another $4 million had Biden won. His testimony confirmed long-rumored compensation and revealed new details about potential incentives, according to a source familiar with the hearing.

Donilon defended Biden’s leadership despite the president’s age, stating in his opening remarks that Biden had “grown stronger and wiser” during his term and was tested by some of the most challenging issues any modern president had faced. He also downplayed concerns over Biden’s debate performance, which many Democrats saw as damaging.

His high compensation, first detailed in the book Original Sin, has been a source of quiet resentment within Democratic circles. Critics allege Donilon’s financial interest and loyalty to Biden contributed to strategic missteps in the failed campaign.

For comparison, campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon reportedly earned $300,000. Donilon and the Biden campaign declined to comment.

The House Oversight Committee continues to probe Biden’s fitness for office and campaign decision-making, with interviews of other senior aides forthcoming.
