Cody Allen Balmer, the suspect arrested for setting fire to Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s residence, cited support for Palestinians as his motive, according to a state police affidavit.
Balmer allegedly called 911 after the early Sunday attack, identifying himself and stating that Shapiro “needs to know” he would not take part in “his plans for what he wants to do to the Palestinian people.” The affidavit quotes Balmer as saying, “Our people have been put through too much by that monster,” and referred to the damage as “a banquet hall to clean up.”
Governor Shapiro, who is Jewish, and his family were home but unharmed during the attack, which occurred shortly after a Passover Seder. Balmer faces multiple charges including attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson, and assault.
Search warrants for Balmer’s property include requests for writings referencing Shapiro, Palestine, Gaza, Israel, or the ongoing conflict.
