A shooting at Evergreen High School in Jefferson County, Colorado, left two students wounded and the suspected gunman dead Wednesday afternoon, according to the sheriff’s office.

The incident began just before 12:30 p.m. on campus, about 30 miles southwest of Denver. Authorities said a juvenile male armed with a handgun opened fire on classmates before shooting himself. He later died at CommonSpirit St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood. Two other students were hospitalized — one in serious condition and another stabilized and transferred to a different facility. A fourth individual sustained non-gunshot injuries.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Jacki Kelley said investigators are searching the suspect’s home, car, and locker, and interviewing student witnesses to determine motive. Federal agents, including the FBI, also responded.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis said students should be able to attend school “safely and without fear,” while Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO) called the shooting “horrifying.”

The attack comes two weeks after a Minneapolis school shooting killed two children and injured more than a dozen. Colorado has a tragic history of school violence, including the 1999 Columbine massacre, a 2013 shooting at Arapahoe High School, and a 2019 fatal shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch.
