Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Monday that he will run as an independent in New York City’s mayoral race after losing the Democratic primary to Zohran Mamdani. In a campaign video, Cuomo criticized Mamdani for offering “slick slogans, but no real solutions,” and pledged to deliver safer streets, affordable housing, and accessible childcare.
Cuomo’s entry into the general election adds to a crowded field that includes Mamdani, incumbent Mayor Eric Adams (also running as an independent), and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani defeated Cuomo by 12 points in the ranked-choice primary.
Cuomo is urging all non-leading candidates by mid-September to withdraw, himself included, to avoid vote-splitting. Critics fear the split could hand Mamdani the win. Despite pressure from figures like billionaire Bill Ackman to exit, Cuomo has refused to back down.
