A recent Fox News poll reveals a record high 59% of Americans support the legality of abortion, marking a significant increase from the previous record low of 44% in April 2022. This surge in support comes as the Supreme Court considers the legality of abortion pills and as discussions around a national abortion ban gain traction among GOP politicians.
The increase in support spans across all demographics, even among groups traditionally critical of abortion rights. Notably, there’s been a 16% rise in support among individuals aged 65 and older, a 12% increase among conservatives, an 11% uptick among registered Republicans, and a 10% growth among white evangelical Christians.
The poll indicates a strong preference for abortion to be always legal, with 35% of respondents in favor, compared to 7% who believe it should never be legal. The political landscape has seen both parties emphasizing abortion, with Democrats pushing for the restoration of pre-Dobbs protections and some Republicans advocating for more stringent restrictions.
The poll also addressed the topic of a 15-week abortion ban, with 54% of Americans opposing such a measure and 43% in favor, a reversal from last year’s sentiment. Pollster Daron Shaw commented on the significant shift in public opinion on abortion, suggesting that the Dobbs decision has provided Democrats with a new point of mobilization despite the complex legal and policy implications.
