American pride remains low, with 67% of respondents expressing extreme or high pride in being American, according to a new Gallup survey. This figure, significantly lower than the 81%-91% range from 2001 to 2016, is just slightly above the 2020 low of 63%.
Additionally, 18% of Americans report being moderately proud, while only 5% claim no pride at all.
Experts attribute this decline to widespread dissatisfaction with the government. Tabitha Bonilla from Northwestern University’s Institute for Policy Research emphasized the link between decreased national pride and eroding trust in government institutions. Todd Belt from George Washington University noted that trust in government is at an “incredibly low level,” with a recent GW Politics Poll showing only 20% trust in government.
The survey also highlighted generational differences, with only 21% of those aged 18-34 reporting extreme pride compared to 54% of those 55 and older.
Political affiliation also plays a role: 59% of Republicans, 34% of Democrats, and 36% of independents are extremely proud to be American. Republican pride has decreased from over 70% during Trump’s presidency, while Democratic pride has slightly rebounded from a low of 22% in 2019.
