All 22 Democratic governors signed a joint letter Sunday condemning President Donald Trump for his deployment of the National Guard to Los Angeles without the consent of California Gov. Gavin Newsom. The move followed violent protests sparked by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids.
“President Trump’s move to deploy California’s National Guard is an alarming abuse of power,” the Democratic Governors Association wrote. “Governors are the Commanders in Chief of their National Guard, and the federal government activating them without consulting the state is ineffective and dangerous.”
Newsom shared the letter on X, saying he was proud to stand with fellow governors. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul also posted the statement, calling Trump’s action “an alarming abuse of power.”
The letter emphasized that Newsom had already condemned violence and that local authorities should be trusted to maintain order without “federal interference and intimidation.”
Meanwhile, Trump has doubled down, stating Los Angeles has been “invaded and occupied by Illegal Aliens and Criminals.” He vowed to “liberate” the city, tasking Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Attorney General Pam Bondi with restoring order.
