President Biden announced a record-breaking 24 million sign-ups for 2025 Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace plans, surpassing last year’s 21.3 million enrollees. Enhanced subsidies, introduced in the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act and extended by the Inflation Reduction Act through 2025, were credited for the growth.
President Biden emphasized his administration’s commitment to lowering healthcare costs and expanding coverage, urging Congress to extend the ACA premium tax credits. However, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that making these subsidies permanent would cost $335 billion over 10 years, while their expiration could leave 3.8 million more Americans uninsured annually starting in 2026.
Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra highlighted the ACA’s significance, likening it to Medicare and Social Security as a cornerstone of federal entitlement programs. ACA open enrollment ends Jan. 15, with Republicans set to decide the program’s future when subsidies expire in 2025.
