The U.S. military has carried out airstrikes on targets in eastern Syria, which are associated with the Iran Revolutionary Guard Corps. This action was taken in response to a series of 12 attacks on U.S. bases and personnel in Iraq, and four in Syria, since October 17.

The strikes aim to deter future aggression from Iranian-backed groups and come amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stated that while the U.S. does not seek to escalate the conflict further, it is prepared to take additional measures to protect its forces. The U.S. has been clear in its intent to respond to any attacks on its personnel, and these airstrikes were anticipated as a part of its self-defense strategy.
