MILWAUKEE, Wis. — A federal judge sentenced 31-year-old Eduardo Flores-Ruiz to time served Wednesday for illegally reentering the United States, concluding a case that has drawn national attention after a Wisconsin judge was accused of helping him evade immigration agents.

U.S. District Judge Pamela Pepper delivered the sentence, warning Flores-Ruiz he would face harsher penalties if he returned after deportation. “I very much hope you can find a way to make a living back home rather than coming back here,” she said.

Flores-Ruiz, originally from Michoacán, Mexico, was arrested in April after allegedly being escorted through a restricted courthouse door by Milwaukee County Judge Hannah Dugan to avoid detention by federal agents. Agents caught him after a brief foot chase outside the courthouse.

Dugan was indicted in May on federal charges of obstruction and concealing an individual to prevent arrest. Her trial is scheduled to begin Dec. 15. She has denied wrongdoing, saying she acted within her courtroom authority.

Flores-Ruiz, who spent nearly seven months in custody, pleaded guilty to illegal reentry and apologized for entering the U.S. unlawfully. He is currently being held at Dodge County Jail awaiting deportation.
