PALM BEACH, Florida — President Donald Trump voted by mail in a Florida special election despite years of publicly criticizing the practice, according to election records.
Data from the Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections shows Trump submitted his ballot earlier this month from his Mar-a-Lago residence ahead of Tuesday’s election. The race will decide a state House seat between Democrat Emily Gregory and Republican Jon Maples.
Trump has long argued that widespread mail-in voting increases the risk of fraud, frequently referring to it as “mail-in cheating,” particularly during the 2020 election cycle. His criticism intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic when mail voting expanded nationwide.
The White House dismissed concerns over the apparent contradiction, stating that Trump’s vote complies with Florida law and falls within exceptions allowing absentee ballots for travel or logistical reasons. The administration continues to support restrictions on broader mail-in voting through the proposed SAVE America Act, which would impose stricter voter identification and citizenship requirements.
Democrats have criticized the legislation, arguing it could restrict access to voting, while election experts maintain there is little evidence of widespread voter fraud tied to mail-in ballots.
