Sioux City, IA — President Donald Trump said Thursday that he believes he has the right to seek a third term in office, despite the Constitution explicitly prohibiting anyone from being elected president more than twice.

Speaking at a Republican campaign rally in Sioux City, Trump acknowledged that the law restricts him but argued that his continued false claim that the 2020 election was stolen should effectively entitle him to another run.

“I think I have the right to run again,” Trump said, adding, “They cheated us on the second one, because we won it three times.”

Trump did not win the 2020 election. Joe Biden defeated him in both the Electoral College and popular vote, and Trump’s campaign and allies failed to produce evidence of fraud sufficient to overturn the result despite dozens of lawsuits, recounts and audits.

The 22nd Amendment is unusually direct: no person may be elected president more than twice. It contains no exception for a president who believes an earlier election was stolen.

Trump’s latest comments continue months of public flirtation with remaining in power beyond January 2029. Supporters have promoted “Trump 2028” merchandise, while some allies have publicly discussed hypothetical ways he might attempt to remain president.

Changing the two-term limit would require a constitutional amendment, not a declaration that a previous election was unfair.

Trump made the remarks while campaigning for Republican Senate candidate Ashley Hinson and other GOP candidates ahead of the Nov. 3 midterms.
