Washington, DC — President Donald Trump said Monday that any country continuing to do business with Iran will face a 25% tariff on all imports to the United States, a move that significantly escalates economic pressure as protests in the Islamic Republic enter a third week.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the tariff would take effect immediately and apply broadly to all U.S. trade with countries maintaining commercial ties to Iran. The announcement follows recent comments in which Trump suggested potential military action if reports of Iranian security forces killing protesters are confirmed. Speaking aboard Air Force One late Sunday, Trump said the administration was closely monitoring developments inside Iran.

The president has framed tariffs as a central foreign policy tool during his second term, repeatedly arguing they can deter conflict without direct military engagement. Trump has claimed tariffs or tariff threats have helped end multiple international conflicts, though those assertions remain disputed.

The latest warning comes as the Supreme Court considers a major legal challenge to Trump’s authority to impose tariffs under a 1977 statute that has never before been used for broad trade actions. A coalition of states and small businesses has already prevailed in two lower courts, arguing the law does not grant the president unilateral power to levy sweeping import taxes.

If the Supreme Court rules against the administration, the federal government could be required to refund more than $133.5 billion in tariff revenue. Businesses have warned that existing tariffs have already increased consumer prices, raising concerns about the economic impact of further escalation tied to Iran.
