President Donald Trump said Sunday that he plans to meet with New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, signaling a potential easing of tensions between the Republican president and the progressive Democrat who built his campaign around opposing Trump’s policies. Trump, who spent the weekend in Florida, told reporters that Mamdani “would like to meet with us” and that they would “work something out.”

The comments mark a notable shift from Trump’s recent rhetoric. For months, he has attacked Mamdani, falsely calling him a “communist,” warning of New York’s decline if the democratic socialist won, and even threatening to deport him despite his status as a naturalized U.S. citizen. Mamdani, 34, defeated former Gov. Andrew Cuomo by nearly nine points, powered by a coalition of progressive voters and a social-media-driven campaign that regularly criticized Trump’s second-term immigration agenda.

Following his victory, Mamdani said he planned to “Trump-proof” the city but added that he was willing to work with the White House if it benefitted New Yorkers. His team did not comment Sunday, instead pointing to his earlier statement that cooperation with the president would be essential for the city’s success.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that Trump was referring to Mamdani and said no meeting date has been set. Trump also told reporters the U.S. may open discussions with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, saying he was willing to “talk to anybody.”
