Bullhead City, AZ — President Donald Trump told supporters Wednesday that government officials who leak sensitive information “should be shot,” escalating his rhetoric against people who disclose information from inside the federal government.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Bullhead City, Arizona, Trump complained about reports involving potential U.S. military action against Iran and claimed leaked information about the timing of strikes could endanger national security.

“In my opinion, leakers should be shot,” Trump said. He added that “in the old days, we used to shoot leakers” and described them as “the scum of the earth.”

Trump did not identify a specific person he believed should be executed, and leaking classified information can already result in serious criminal charges and prison sentences. The death penalty is not a general punishment for unauthorized disclosures to the press.

Trump also attacked journalists while discussing leaks, accusing reporters of inventing anonymous sources and describing them as nearly as bad as government leakers.

The remarks came during a campaign swing intended to boost Republican candidates ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections.

They also add to a series of increasingly aggressive statements by Trump toward critics, journalists and perceived political opponents while his administration remains engaged in military operations involving Iran.
