Columbia, South Carolina — Sen. Darline Graham declined Monday to say whether she would have voted to certify Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential election victory, instead arguing that the nation’s election system needs major changes.
During a press conference, MS NOW reporter Mychael Schnell asked Graham whether she agreed with her late brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham, who voted to certify the 2020 Electoral College results following the Jan. 6 Capitol attack.
“I think our election system is broken,” Graham responded, pivoting to her support for the SAVE America Act, which would impose new federal voter-identification and proof-of-citizenship requirements.
Lindsey Graham rejected Donald Trump’s effort to overturn the 2020 result and voted to certify Biden’s victory. His sister was appointed by Gov. Henry McMaster to fill his Senate seat after his death in July and is now seeking the Republican nomination for a full term.
Darline Graham faces Rep. Ralph Norman in Tuesday’s GOP runoff. She led the initial primary with about 33% of the vote compared with Norman’s 25%. Trump has endorsed Graham and campaigned on her behalf.
Her refusal to answer the certification question comes as Trump continues to falsely claim that widespread fraud caused his 2020 defeat. Graham did not say who she believes legitimately won that election or how she would handle a similar certification dispute in 2028.
