Katy, Texas A 76-year-old woman died after a Tesla crashed into a home in the Katy area Friday night, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said the crash happened around 8 p.m. on Blooming Park Lane. The driver, identified by authorities as 44-year-old Michael Butler, told investigators he was using Tesla’s automated driver-assistance system when the vehicle left the roadway and struck the home at a high rate of speed.
The woman inside the home, identified as Martha Avila Mantilla, was taken by Life Flight to a hospital and later died from her injuries. Family members said the home is now uninhabitable while investigators continue reviewing the crash.
Authorities said Butler showed no signs of intoxication and cooperated with investigators. Officials have not determined what role, if any, the driver, vehicle speed, or Tesla’s driver-assistance features played in the crash.
Tesla says Autopilot and Full Self-Driving features require an attentive driver ready to take control. The crash comes as Tesla’s driver-assistance systems continue to face scrutiny from regulators and courts.
