Los Angeles, California – Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Alberto Carvalho has resigned nearly four months after FBI agents searched his home and district office as part of a federal investigation tied to the district’s failed artificial intelligence chatbot project.
The school board accepted Carvalho’s resignation effective Sunday, according to AP. Carvalho had been on paid administrative leave since shortly after the Feb. 25 searches. Federal authorities have not announced criminal charges against him, and Carvalho has denied wrongdoing.
The investigation is linked to LAUSD’s relationship with AllHere, a now-defunct education technology company that developed the district’s AI chatbot, “Ed.” The tool was promoted as a way to help families and students navigate school services but was abandoned after the company collapsed.
The Los Angeles Times reported that AllHere’s founder was arrested in 2024 and accused of defrauding investors by inflating company revenue and customer numbers.
Carvalho, who came to Los Angeles in 2022 after leading Miami-Dade County Public Schools, wrote that he was stepping down to allow the district to focus on students and learning “without distraction.” Interim Superintendent Andrés Chait will continue leading the district.
