Nashville, Tennessee — Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee is backing a proposal to rename Nashville International Airport in honor of Dolly Parton, following the country music icon’s death earlier this week at age 80.
Lee announced the proposal Friday, saying Parton’s life and legacy were deeply connected to Tennessee. He said renaming the airport would recognize her music, philanthropy and long-standing ties to the state.
The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority is expected to discuss the proposed change at its Sept. 17 meeting. Airport President and CEO Doug Kreulen praised Parton’s commitment to dignity, kindness and opportunity, saying those values align with the airport’s mission.
Parton grew up in a one-room cabin in Sevier County as one of 12 children before becoming one of the most recognizable performers in country music. She maintained strong ties to Tennessee throughout her life, supporting scholarships, health initiatives and other charitable causes.
The proposal comes amid a wave of tributes from political leaders across the country. Maine Gov. Janet Mills ordered the governor’s residence illuminated in pink in Parton’s honor, while lawmakers from Tennessee praised her connection to the state and her charitable work.
Any formal renaming would require action by the airport authority before the change could take effect.
