JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY — Six people were injured Monday evening after suspects on a moped allegedly threw an acidic substance at a group outside a residential address in Jersey City, according to police.
Jersey City police said officers responded to Wilkinson Avenue after receiving reports that two people riding a moped drove past a group and threw the substance at them. Police initially reported five victims but later updated the total to six. Three of those injured are teenagers.
A 21-year-old woman was transferred to a local burn unit for treatment of second-degree burns to her face and scalp. The five other victims were reported to be in stable condition.
Police said the attack appears to have been targeted and may have followed an earlier altercation. Preliminary information indicates that several women were outside 105 Wilkinson Avenue when the substance was thrown. Authorities believe the substance may have been sulfuric acid.
One minor has been arrested in connection with the incident, though police said charges are still pending. Officials did not immediately release additional information about the second suspected rider.
Jersey City Mayor James Solomon condemned the attack and said he directed police to use all available resources in the investigation. “Violence like this has absolutely no place on our streets,” Solomon said.
The investigation remains ongoing as police work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the attack.
