Columbus, Ohio — Former U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown won Ohio’s Democratic Senate primary Tuesday, securing his party’s nomination for a high-stakes general election against Republican Sen. Jon Husted in one of the nation’s most closely watched battleground races.
Brown defeated Democratic challenger Ron Kincaid after building a fundraising advantage and maintaining strong support among labor groups and Democratic voters across the state. The race now shifts toward a heavily financed November contest that could play a major role in determining control of the U.S. Senate.
Husted became Ohio’s incumbent senator in early 2025 after Gov. Mike DeWine appointed him to fill the seat vacated by Vice President JD Vance. Republicans are expected to strongly defend the seat, with the Senate Leadership Fund already pledging nearly $79 million in support for Husted’s campaign. Democrats have also signaled major investments, with Senate Majority PAC committing approximately $40 million to support Brown.
During the campaign, Brown emphasized economic issues affecting working-class voters, arguing that many Ohioans believe the political and economic system is tilted against ordinary families. Husted’s campaign has focused on Brown’s lengthy Washington tenure, portraying him as part of the political establishment.
Libertarian candidate Bill Redpath will also appear on the November ballot in what is expected to become one of the country’s most expensive Senate races.
