NEW YORK, New York — Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced legislation Sunday to make the Rainbow Flag a permanent, congressionally authorized symbol at the Stonewall National Monument after the Trump administration removed it earlier this month.

Standing near the monument’s flagpole in Manhattan, Schumer called the removal “a deeply outrageous action” and said his bill would ensure the Pride Flag can legally fly at Stonewall and other federal sites. The measure is being introduced in the House by Rep. Dan Goldman.

The flag was reportedly taken down by federal authorities before activists and local officials re-raised it on Feb. 12. The Department of the Interior described that action as a “political stunt.” The Rainbow Flag currently remains in place.

Schumer argued that “rights that are not secured in law can be threatened,” referencing the Respect for Marriage Act as an example of bipartisan protections. He said he hopes to secure support across party lines despite Republican control of Congress.

Local leaders and LGBTQ advocates joined the announcement, framing the flag’s removal as symbolic of broader political tensions over LGBTQ rights and federal authority at historic sites.
