HOUSTON, TX — Hundreds of residents gathered in Houston and San Antonio on Sunday to peacefully protest renewed federal immigration crackdowns targeting undocumented immigrants in workplaces, courthouses, and even during wellness checks on unaccompanied minors.
The demonstrations follow days of unrest in California, where President Donald Trump deployed National Guard troops in response to violent protests. Trump has warned that federal troops could be sent “everywhere” if protests spread.
In Texas, however, Sunday’s gatherings remained peaceful. Protesters marched through downtown Houston and San Antonio, holding signs, distributing snacks, and chanting in support of immigrant rights. Social media images showed families and advocacy groups walking side-by-side, calling for humane immigration enforcement.
Gov. Greg Abbott supported the president’s stance, tweeting, “An organized assault has been waged against federal law enforcement officials. It’s time to put an end to it.”
The protests were largely in response to what activists say is a sharp escalation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The agency has reportedly increased workplace raids and made arrests at public institutions like courthouses.
Demonstrations are expected to continue across the country as the administration ramps up efforts to fulfill Trump’s campaign pledge of mass deportations.
