LAS VEGAS — A federal investigation is underway after more than 300 piles of cremated human remains were discovered dumped in the desert near Searchlight, Nevada, roughly an hour south of Las Vegas.

Officials from Palm Mortuaries and Cemeteries recovered approximately 315 piles on Wednesday, following an 8 News Now investigation that first reported the discovery in August. Bureau of Land Management officials confirmed the remains were human “cremains,” prompting a federal review into possible violations of laws governing the handling of remains on public land.

Palm Mortuaries President Celena DiLullo said each pile represented “a person who lived in our community,” adding that the funeral home plans to place the ashes in a crypt to ensure they are not forgotten. Federal policy permits scattering ashes on public land but bans commercial dumping, which investigators believe occurred here.

While the remains were initially linked to a closed funeral home, authorities later ruled out McDermott’s Funeral Home. Sources suggest another shuttered business may be responsible, though it denies involvement.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Bureau of Land Management.
