CARY, NORTH CAROLINA — Jonathan Miller, the Libertarian nominee for North Carolina Senate District 16, was arrested Monday after an hours-long standoff with Cary police that began when officers attempted to conduct a welfare check following alarming social media posts.

Police said officers went to Miller’s home around 8:26 a.m. after posts from his X account referenced suicide and a possible confrontation with law enforcement. Cary Police Chief Terry Sult said Miller was armed with a holstered revolver when officers approached and fled into nearby woods after being ordered to keep his hands away from the weapon.

Miller continued posting during the pursuit, at one point saying he had “six shots and the high ground.” He also called WRAL during the standoff and acknowledged that he had been depressed and suicidal the previous night. Police eventually surrounded Miller and took him into custody shortly after 3 p.m. No shots were fired and no injuries were reported.

Miller, 46, faces charges including communicating threats, resisting an officer, going armed to the terror of the people and felony possession of a firearm by a felon.

He remains on the Nov. 3 ballot against Democratic incumbent Sen. Gale Adcock and Republican Philip Hensley. The North Carolina Libertarian Party thanked Cary police for resolving the situation without violence.
