California Governor Gavin Newsom announced $140 million in new state investments for Planned Parenthood this week, aiming to preserve access to reproductive and preventive health care as the Trump administration moves to strip the organization of federal Medicaid funding.
“California is a reproductive freedom state,” Newsom said Thursday. “Trump’s efforts to defund Planned Parenthood put all our communities at risk as people seek basic health care.” The funding will support Planned Parenthood clinics that provide cancer screenings, birth control, STI testing, and wellness exams to low-income residents.
The announcement coincided with California Attorney General Rob Bonta joining 20 other states in filing an amicus brief opposing the Trump administration’s “Defund Provision” in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Bonta called the move “an assault on healthcare” that would devastate access to reproductive services nationwide.
Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California praised the funding as essential to keeping clinics open amid reduced federal support. The federal case challenging the defund provision remains pending in U.S. District Court in Massachusetts.
