Los Angeles, California — Three people were killed Tuesday evening when a news helicopter used by NBC4 Los Angeles and Telemundo 52 crashed in the Chatsworth neighborhood while covering a separate deadly collision involving an SUV and a Metro bus.
NBC4 identified the two people aboard the helicopter as aerial journalist Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw, both employees of Angel City Air. A third person was killed on the ground. The Los Angeles Fire Department said the helicopter went down shortly before 7 p.m. near Mason Avenue, igniting a fire that damaged four vehicles and two storage containers.
The crash happened while several news helicopters were covering an earlier collision between an SUV and a city bus in the same area. That crash killed at least two people and sent six others to hospitals, according to the fire department.
Video from the helicopter’s final live transmission captured an alarm sounding as the aircraft rapidly lost altitude. Aviation experts cautioned that the footage alone cannot establish the cause. The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are investigating.
Moreno had worked in aerial news coverage since 2010 and regularly reported for both NBC4 and Telemundo 52. Marciniw was a longtime Southern California pilot who had flown with Moreno since 2023.
NBC4 anchors announced the deaths during an emotional live broadcast Tuesday night as colleagues continued reporting from both crash scenes.
