ALBANY, NEW YORK — New York is set to implement a first-in-the-nation law requiring certain 3D printers to include technology designed to prevent the printing of firearm components, an effort aimed at reducing the spread of so-called “ghost guns.”
The law, which takes effect next week, directs the state to develop and eventually require software capable of identifying and blocking digital blueprints used to manufacture firearms or major gun components. Supporters say the measure could help curb the growing number of privately made firearms recovered by law enforcement agencies.
According to a U.S. Department of Justice report cited by state officials, the number of privately manufactured firearms recovered by law enforcement increased from approximately 1,600 in 2017 to nearly 27,500 in 2023. Many of those weapons lacked serial numbers, making them difficult for investigators to trace.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg called the law a “game changer” for preventing illegal firearm production. State officials argue that advances in 3D printing technology have made it easier for individuals to manufacture weapons at home without background checks or traditional firearm records.
The law’s implementation will depend on experts developing software capable of accurately detecting firearm blueprints before they are printed. Some industry representatives say the technology already exists. Others remain skeptical.
Bill Decker, executive chairman of The Association of 3D Printing, questioned whether such systems can reliably distinguish between firearm parts and other legal objects. The National Rifle Association also criticized the law, arguing that it could restrict lawful activities protected by the Second Amendment.
New York’s action is being closely watched by lawmakers in other states. California legislators are currently considering similar proposals as concerns about untraceable firearms continue to grow nationwide.
