Las Vegas, NV — A new analysis of Nevada elections offers a stark reality check to years of claims from President Donald Trump and other Republicans that widespread voter fraud threatens American elections.

Researchers at UNLV’s Brookings Mountain West and Lincy Institute found just 11 documented election-fraud cases in Nevada between 2012 and 2021, a period covering 14 elections and approximately 8.5 million votes.

That works out to roughly one documented case for every 773,000 votes cast.

Ten of the 11 cases resulted in criminal convictions, demonstrating that isolated fraud does occur and can be prosecuted. But the numbers bear little resemblance to claims of systemic or election-changing fraud.

The findings are especially notable because researchers relied on data compiled by the conservative Heritage Foundation, which has spent years documenting election-fraud cases nationwide.

Only two Nevada cases over nearly three decades involved noncitizens. Four involved duplicate voting and five involved false registrations.

One of the most striking cases involved Donald Kirk Hartle, whose claim that someone had voted in his deceased wife’s name was promoted by Nevada Republicans after the 2020 election. Investigators ultimately determined Hartle himself had cast the ballot using his wife’s identity. He later pleaded guilty.

A separate Brookings analysis of Heritage’s nationwide database similarly found only tiny numbers of fraudulent votes across hundreds of millions of ballots, with none changing an election outcome.
