Massachusetts officials are pushing back after President Donald Trump claimed he could move 2026 FIFA World Cup games out of Boston due to “unsafe conditions.” Boston is scheduled to host seven matches at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro.

Trump cited recent “street takeovers” in several Massachusetts cities and criticized Boston Mayor Michelle Wu as “not good,” adding that he could ask FIFA President Gianni Infantino to relocate the games. Wu responded in a statement emphasizing Boston’s readiness and pride in hosting the international tournament, calling it “the cradle of liberty and city of champions.”

State Sen. Paul Feeney (D) called Trump’s remarks “absurd but not surprising,” adding that state and federal agencies have been preparing for years to ensure safety. FIFA officials clarified that host cities are under contract and cannot be changed unilaterally, with Vice President Victor Montagliani noting that the event is “FIFA’s jurisdiction.”
