QUEENS, New York — A 22-year-old Long Island man has been arrested after police say he used a knife and hammer to vandalize 11 NYPD vehicles outside a Queens precinct earlier this week. Christian Genwright was taken into custody Tuesday night and faces multiple charges, including reckless endangerment, 11 counts of criminal mischief, and two counts of weapons possession.
Police say surveillance footage captured Genwright stepping out of a silver Lexus near the 116th Precinct stationhouse on North Conduit Avenue around 11:15 p.m. Monday. Video shows him slashing tires on several police vehicles before smashing their windows with a hammer. Both marked and unmarked vehicles were damaged.
Detectives tracked the suspect by identifying the Lexus’ license plate on camera footage, which was registered to Genwright. Officers later detained him at his Valley Stream residence. He was arraigned in Queens Criminal Court on Wednesday and released without bail, authorities said.
The newly built $105 million 116th Precinct stationhouse opened in December 2024, becoming the NYPD’s first newly designated precinct in more than a decade. It covers Rosedale, Springfield Gardens, Brookville and Laurelton—areas previously split between two other precincts.
Police have not publicly identified a motive for the vandalism. The damaged vehicles remain under repair as the investigation continues.
