WHITESTOWN, Indiana — Authorities are weighing charges after a homeowner fatally shot 32-year-old Maria Florinda Rios Perez, who mistakenly went to the wrong address while working as a house cleaner. Police found Rios Perez dead on the porch around 7 a.m. Wednesday in the Indianapolis suburb of about 10,000 people.

Rios Perez’s husband, Mauricio Velazquez, said they had been cleaning homes for seven months and that she collapsed in his arms after being shot. The couple was standing at the home’s front door when the shooting occurred. Rios Perez, a mother of four from Indianapolis, will be buried in Guatemala, according to her family.

Boone County Prosecutor Kent Eastwood said Friday that determining whether to charge the homeowner will be difficult under Indiana’s castle doctrine law, which allows residents to use deadly force if they reasonably believe an unlawful entry is occurring. Similar mistaken-identity shootings in Missouri and New York have resulted in convictions.
