Chicago, Illinois Several Democratic lawmakers and candidates in Illinois are publicly backing renewed calls to abolish U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, reviving a movement that national party strategists have repeatedly warned could carry political risks. The push has intensified following the fatal shooting of Renee Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis, an incident that has reignited criticism of federal immigration enforcement practices.

Among those supporting the position are U.S. Rep. Delia Ramirez, Senate candidates Raja Krishnamoorthi and Juliana Stratton, and congressional candidates Daniel Biss, Kat Abughazaleh, and Patty Garcia. Ramirez responded on social media to a memo from the center-left think tank Third Way, which cautioned Democrats against using “abolish ICE” rhetoric, arguing it could undermine efforts at meaningful reform and benefit Republicans electorally.

Stratton, Illinois’ lieutenant governor, said ICE is “beyond reform,” while Krishnamoorthi stated he would oppose any additional funding for the agency, citing a lack of accountability. Biss and Abughazaleh have echoed similar views, framing the moment as a clear moral dividing line.

Garcia, running unopposed in the Democratic primary for the 4th Congressional District, said halting ICE funding and dismantling the agency are necessary steps toward more humane immigration enforcement. A recent Economist/YouGov poll found 46% of U.S. adults support abolishing ICE, including strong backing among Democrats.
