New York, New York — White House border czar Tom Homan says Immigration and Customs Enforcement will expand its operations in New York City, citing public safety concerns and the city’s sanctuary policies, according to reporting from the Washington Examiner. In an interview with Fox News anchor Bill Hemmer, Homan said federal enforcement teams are already active in the city but will “increase enforcement presence” in the coming weeks.

Homan argued that sanctuary city policies hinder the ability of federal officers to safely apprehend individuals subject to immigration enforcement, saying that if local leaders do not cooperate, agencies are “going to flood the zone.” He added that he is willing to meet with state and city officials to coordinate on public safety issues, emphasizing that cooperation would reduce risks for both federal agents and New York residents.

The comments come as President Donald Trump prepares to meet with New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani before Mamdani takes office on January 1. Trump has publicly expressed hope for a productive relationship with the incoming mayor.

In recent months, the Trump administration has launched targeted immigration operations in cities across the country, including Chicago’s “Operation Midway Blitz,” Charlotte’s “Operation Charlotte’s Web,” and the Gulf Coast-focused “Swamp Sweep,” reported by the Associated Press.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul warned that sending additional federal officers to the city could harm both public stability and economic interests, arguing that chaos “is counterproductive” to national goals. Despite those concerns, Homan reiterated that operations in New York “are going to happen,” saying past attempts to collaborate with local officials—such as a proposal involving Rikers Island—were blocked by city leaders.
