Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) said Sunday that the state is “targeting professors who push leftist ideologies” after sharing a report about a University of Texas professor allegedly dismissed over political differences.

In a post on X, Abbott linked to an Axios article detailing the case of Art Markman, a UT professor who said he was removed from an administrative position in September “due to ideological differences.” Abbott wrote that Texas must “end indoctrination and return to education fundamentals at all levels of education.”

The governor’s comments follow a series of controversies involving higher education across the state. Earlier this year, a Texas A&M University professor was fired after teaching a course on gender and sexuality that drew conservative backlash, ultimately leading to the university president’s resignation.

Abbott’s remarks come as the Trump administration pushes a national initiative to counter what it calls “leftist dogma” in universities. The administration recently urged nine major schools — including the University of Texas at Austin — to sign a 10-point plan promising funding incentives if they adopt new federal standards.

Several universities have rejected the proposal, though UT officials said they “welcome the new opportunity” to work with federal officials on future policy discussions.
