New York City, New York. Prominent anti-Trump critic George Conway III has officially entered the race to succeed Rep. Jerry Nadler, filing paperwork Monday to run as a Democrat for the Manhattan-based congressional seat, according to records from the Federal Election Commission. Nadler, 78, announced earlier this year that he would not seek reelection, opening a safe Democratic seat in one of the party’s strongest districts.
Conway is a longtime conservative lawyer who later became one of Donald Trump’s most vocal critics, ultimately co-founding the anti-Trump Lincoln Project. He was previously married to Kellyanne Conway, a senior adviser to Trump during his first term; the two divorced in 2023. The New York Times reported last month that Conway was considering a run, speculation that is now confirmed with his formal filing.
The race is expected to be highly competitive. Conway joins a crowded Democratic primary field that includes Jack Schlossberg, the grandson of former President John F. Kennedy; New York State Assembly member Micah Lasher; and gun-violence prevention activists Cameron Kasky and Mathew Shurka. With the district’s strong Democratic tilt, the primary winner is widely expected to prevail in the general election.
Conway becomes the second former Republican and high-profile Trump critic to switch parties and seek office as a Democrat. Former Georgia Republican Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan is also running as a Democrat in a bid for governor next year, reflecting a broader realignment among some anti-Trump conservatives.
