CHICAGO, Illinois — Fourteen suburban Chicago mothers were arrested Friday outside the Broadview Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility during a protest against the Trump administration’s “Operation Midway Blitz,” an ongoing immigration enforcement campaign. The demonstration, organized by a coalition of self-described “suburban moms,” called for an end to the raids that they say have sown fear throughout local communities.
The protesters, some holding signs reading “Hands Off Chicago,” said they were using their “privilege as white women” to draw attention to the crackdown. A caravan of about 20 cars honked in solidarity, while faith leaders held a prayer service nearby. Police said the women were peaceful as they were led away in handcuffs after crossing barriers outside the facility.
The Broadview site has become a focal point for opposition to federal immigration operations, with repeated clashes between demonstrators and agents. The American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois has sued over detainee conditions, prompting a federal judge to order improvements this week.
The arrests followed public outrage over the ICE detention of a daycare teacher in Chicago earlier this week. Trump’s campaign, launched in September, has led to more than 3,000 arrests in the region, including U.S. citizens and residents with no criminal history.
