Mint Hill, North Carolina — Federal authorities say they disrupted a planned New Year’s Eve terrorist attack in suburban Charlotte, arresting an 18-year-old who investigators say was inspired by the Islamic State group and intended to carry out a mass-casualty assault using knives and hammers.
The FBI announced Friday that Christian Sturdivant of Mint Hill was arrested and federally charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. According to investigators, Sturdivant planned to attack a grocery store and a Burger King restaurant, seeking crowded locations to maximize harm. Officials said Sturdivant was employed at a Burger King, though the specific store was not identified.
Law enforcement officials said Sturdivant had been under scrutiny for years and spent extensive time online consuming ISIS-related propaganda and producing social media content praising the group. During a search of his home, agents found written plans, tactical gloves, a Kevlar vest, and knives and hammers concealed under his bed. A handwritten note indicated he anticipated being killed by police.
An affidavit alleges that Sturdivant intended to target non-Muslims, LGBTQ individuals, and law enforcement personnel. Authorities said he communicated online with undercover FBI agents and NYPD officers posing as ISIS affiliates, and that he appeared to be acting alone.
FBI officials emphasized that the arrest prevented what could have been a deadly attack, underscoring ongoing concerns about online radicalization and the role of early intervention. The investigation remains active, and prosecutors said additional details may emerge as the case proceeds.
