WASHINGTON, D.C. — California Rep. Eric Swalwell is facing mounting political fallout after allegations of sexual assault surfaced during his gubernatorial campaign.
According to reporting by the San Francisco Chronicle and confirmed in part by CBS News and The Hill, a former staffer accused Swalwell of assaulting her on multiple occasions. The allegations have not been independently verified, and Swalwell has denied them, calling the claims false and politically motivated.
In response, several prominent Democrats withdrew their support. Rep. Jimmy Gomez resigned as a campaign co-chair and urged Swalwell to exit the race. Sens. Adam Schiff and Ruben Gallego also pulled their endorsements, citing the seriousness of the allegations.
Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi called for a full investigation, emphasizing the need for transparency. Additional organizations, including labor and medical groups, suspended their support pending further developments.
The allegations come as Swalwell campaigns in a crowded race to succeed term-limited California Gov. Gavin Newsom. Despite calls to withdraw, his name will remain on the ballot due to filing deadlines.
The situation remains fluid as political and legal scrutiny intensifies.
