Minneapolis, MinnesotaDemocrats in Congress reacted sharply Saturday after federal agents fatally shot a man during an operation in Minneapolis, with some lawmakers calling for sweeping actions including blocking Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding and deploying the National Guard.

The shooting has intensified Democratic criticism of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and the Trump administration’s expanded use of federal immigration authorities in major cities. Video circulating online appears to show agents tackling a man before gunfire erupts, after which at least one agent fires multiple rounds. Minneapolis police later confirmed the man died at the scene.

DHS said the individual approached Border Patrol officers with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun, resisted attempts to disarm him, and was shot after agents feared for their lives. That account has been disputed by several Democrats, who are demanding independent investigations and prosecutions.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) urged Senate Democrats to block DHS funding and called for activating the National Guard. Rep. Seth Magaziner (D-R.I.) said the Senate should reject DHS funding until “significant reforms” are added. Rep. Robin Kelly (D-Ill.) renewed calls to impeach DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, while Rep. Yassamin Ansari (D-Ariz.) called to abolish ICE entirely.

Other Democrats took a more cautious tone. Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) called for a transparent investigation, noting the need for facts before conclusions.

The Senate is expected to vote next week on the DHS bill, which is bundled with funding for other agencies, raising the possibility that blocking it could trigger a partial government shutdown.
